Pantomime Coach Poster
This poster was produced for Tillings bus company.
Thomas Tilling commenced his commercial empire in London in 1847 and over time his family became major bus operators. In 1948 Tilling Group was nationalised under the auspices of British Transport Commission and absorbed into the National Bus Company in 1969.
Tillings were quite parsimonious and were also frugal with expenditure on publicity. Private hire, express coach services and coach tours received greater attention, and publicity was confined to these small panels posted in buses, as well as bus side adverts and larger posters for display in bus stations and enquiry offices. Often, artists were commissioned to produce generic posters which would be overprinted with local operators details.
