This was the first games to be held in a communist state. The US boycotted the event after the invasion of Afghanistan and the posters were withdrawn.
Designed by the Levi Strauss clothing company, the poster artwork shows a close-up of the rear wheel of a racing bicycle with a map of Europe as the rear gear. This is one of a series of six posters commissioned by the blue jeans manufacturer, who were official sponsors of the US team. The other posters each illustrated a sport associated with a continent - Skiing (North America), Gymnastics (Asia), Swimming (Australia), Track & Field (Africa), Soccer (South America), Cycling (Europe).
