Thomas Tilling commenced his commercial empire in London in 1847 and over time his family became major bus operators. In 1948 Tilling Group was nationalised under the auspices of British Transport Commission and later absorbed into the National Bus Company in 1969.
Tillings (as they remained colloquially known) were quite parsimonious and frugal with expenditure on publicity. Private Hire, express coach services and coach tours received some attention and publicity was mostly confined to these small panels posted in buses.
