Based in Darlington, United Automobile Services became part of the nationalised Tilling Group of bus and coach companies from 1948 to 1969. United's operating area included North Yorkshire, Co. Durham, Northumberland and north Cumberland.

Services were also offered from the Tyne and Wear area to Merseyside and London.
