Founded in Bournemouth by Thomas Elliott in 1880, Royal Blue involved itself with all manner of horse related businesses and expanded into motor coach operation in 1913. Its first express coach service to London began in 1919. Expansion was rapid and with the business sold to Southern and Western National in 1934 and the forging of many alliances with other operators, the company established a near monopoly on express coach services throughout South West England until its absorption via the ownership of the Tilling Group into the National Bus Company when its immaculate and distinct dark blue and cream livery was abolished and its trading name slowly allowed to lapse.
Royal Blue promoted its services with a style seldom equalled by other operators as befitted a high quality coach operator with a wide range of permanently popular holiday destinations.
